Celebrate World Oceans Day In Topeka

Topeka Zoo

I know…….the ocean is thousands of miles away. But should that stop you from celebrating what covers 70% of the earth? That is why the Topeka Zoo is taking part in what June 8th is known as World Ocean’s Day.

The zoo will be partnering with The Ocean Project  to raise our awareness on how important the ocean is and how much of a personal connection we have with them. According to the Ocean Project’s website:

“Since 2002, The Ocean Project has also been the global leader for promoting and coordinating World Oceans Day, to rally the world in June and growing action year-round. We collaborate with our partners to accelerate individual and societal actions on the issues facing our ocean. The Ocean Project empowers our partner network of approximately 2,000 organizations with public opinion and market research, strategic communications tools, and other support for innovative and effective public engagement, and conservation impact.”

There will be plenty of activites that will take place on June 8th. According to a press release sent by the Director of Conservation at the Topeka Zoo Dennis Dinwiddie:

“Ocean’s Day at the zoo will see booth’s and activities around the zoo for guests to enjoy, with make and take crafts, food booths, projects and education stations, as well as the HyVee Seafood Manager grilling seafood on the zoo’s walkways for seafood samplings.  And this year the zoo will introduce fishing on the zoo’s pond for a $5.00 donation with 100% of that going to an ocean conservation fund.  It will be a catch and release fishing day for all ages with no licensing required, so bring your fishing pole and enjoy!”

This will take place from 9 AM till 3 PM. There is no extra charge for admission to the zoo on that day. Only the $5 if you want to fish in the pond. We may not live near an ocean, but we can certainly enjoy one of the greatest wonders on earth.
